 John W. Oxendine is the Insurance and
Safety Fire Commissioner, Industrial Loan Commissioner and Comptroller General for the
State of Georgia. The office regulates approximately 1,600 insurance companies;
licenses approximately 70,000 insurance agents; and, regulates 900 industrial loan
offices.As Safety Fire Commissioner, Oxendine appoints the State Fire Marshal; promotes and provides fire safety education; assist local fire department with investigations; regulates the manufactured housing industry; regulates explosives and hazardous materials; inspects and licenses racetracks; and inspects public buildings for compliance with state fire codes. The office has many fire safety programs. One of the most popular programs is the fire safety house. The fire safety house is a mobile teaching unit used to make fire safety education more realistic for children. The house has a living room, kitchen, and bedroom. Nontoxic smoke is used to simulate an actual fire situation. The bedroom door has a heating element which feels warm when touched. The bedroom has a window and an escape ladder that children are taught to use if the primary exit is blocked. In addition, children are taught vital lessons like Exit Drills in the Home, Crawl Low Under Smoke, and how to make an emergency telephone call.
